One of the great envies of my life is the long-time homeowner. When I speak to owners who have lived in their homes for over twenty years, I tend to feel a clench in my heart. I think of the stories their homes have experienced; the joys, the sorrows, the fun……..the continuity!
I think of my friends who grew up in the same house and had that childhood experience of HOME; this is where I live, this is what I can count on, this is where we keep the cereal, this is where the dog sleeps, this is where my parents are…..this is where security lives.
Then there is the flip side; the homeowners like myself who are transient, moving every few years to accommodate lifestyle, finances, or family dynamics. I like to think there are upsides to the moving. I continually get rid of superfluous effects and have limited clutter. I think my children are more resilient and adaptable to change. In a world that is all about change, that’s a good thing! However, there are costs to moving on a regular basis, both financial and emotional.
Yes, I have been able to increase my home equity, but I have also spent an enormous amount of time, energy, and money on making those moves. The question becomes, “What’s best? Staying or going?” I have to say that for me change is inevitable; it is the foundation of personal growth and I thrive on the challenge of a new project.
I am also blessed with incredible friends who have been there through the moves; cheering and supporting the shifts in my life. In the end, that is what is most important, the one thing I take everywhere I go; the people and relationships in my life that create constancy!
